He was born as a son of Ludwig the metallurgy inspector and Henriette Auguste nee Kriegar. He studied in the secondary school in Oppeln (Opole) and Neisse (Nysa), where he passed mature exam. In 1850 he returned to Malapane (Ozimek), where he started to explore knowledge in metallurgy. After one-year of military service he was employed in Gleiwitz (Gliwice) Steelwork, where within one year he presented the project on novelty loam moulding. Then he worked in a few steelworks and at the same time he perfected his knowledge in Berlin.
